The Onion: Conservative Men Explain How They Are Raising Daughters

The Onion is a newspaper organization that publishes satirical articles to criticize what they believe is wrong with society. In the article I chose, they took several manufactured opinions of how different conservative men raise daughters in their households.

The article primarily utilizes sarcasm and parody to get its point across. It’s sarcastic in the way that it uses different opinions of men. Sarcastically stating opinions such as “If I’ve done my job, she will definitely be running away from home by age 15” or “Every month I add another ox to her dowry fund.”  It’s mockingly stating how conservative men treat their daughters because of the way they view women. They go to extents to “make sure” their daughters run away. It also shows how society asks of dowry funds before women get married and the pressure that puts in families because they have to raise money for it starting from the daughter’s childhood. This is also one of the reasons, as the article states, that women aren’t liked. It is also critical of the conservative ideology as it causes us to reflect on how lowly they view women. Overall, this article uses satire to make fathers, especially conservatives, reflect on how they are misogynistic towards their own daughters and chase them to even leave their homes because having a daughter is looked down on.
